It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Denise Hebert, a beloved educator, coach, mentor, and tireless advocate for youth in Windsor, Essex County, and across Canada. Denise’s passing leaves an immense void in the hearts of her family, colleagues, athletes, students, and all who were fortunate to know her.
Denise was a powerhouse of dedication and passion. For over 30 years, she served as a teacher with the Windsor-Essex Catholic District School Board, guiding countless young people not only in academics but in life, helping them grow, thrive, and pursue their dreams. Her commitment to youth extended beyond the classroom, as she inspired and shaped athletes on the track and field.
A native of Windsor, Denise specialized in coaching the throws — shot put, discus, javelin, and hammer — and her influence was felt by generations of athletes over more than 25 years. She proudly served on the coaching staff for Team Canada at multiple international competitions, including the IAAF World Youth and Junior Championships, the Pan Am Juniors, and the World University Games. She also guided Team Ontario at the Canadian Youth Championships and the 2005 Canada Games, and for over a decade, she was the throws coach for the University of Windsor Lancers, helping develop championship-level athletes.
Denise’s extraordinary service to athletics was recognized nationally when she was appointed to the Order of Canada in 2017, one of the country’s highest civilian honours. Most recently, she was inducted into the Windsor/Essex County Sports Hall of Fame (Class of 2023) in the Builder category, celebrating her lifelong dedication, leadership, and enduring impact on sport.
Above all, Denise was cherished for her generosity, spirit, and unwavering commitment to the people around her. She inspired those she coached, taught, and mentored, leaving a legacy that extends far beyond titles and records. Her warmth, guidance, and passion touched countless lives and strengthened the community in immeasurable ways.
Denise is survived by her husband, Matt, and her beloved family. Our deepest condolences go to them and to all who were blessed by her presence. Denise Hebert’s legacy of mentorship, education, and service will live on in the athletes she coached, the students she taught, and the community she enriched with her spirit and dedication.
Rest in peace, Denise. Your life’s work and your love for others will never be forgotten.
